Our History & Mission

Founded in 2005

WindWalkers Equine Assisted Learning and Therapy Center began with just one horse and two clients. Today, we serve over 135 individuals each week with the help of 20 dedicated therapy horses. Our programs provide life-changing support for at-risk youth, individuals with autism, traumatic brain injuries (TBI), PTSD, developmental delays, and those facing emotional and physical challenges. Since our founding, WindWalkers has proudly delivered over 300,000 service hours to more than 2,750 individuals.

From Aspen to Rifle, WindWalkers is a place where horses and compassionate professionals help individuals and families grow, heal, and thrive. Our impact spans three counties (Garfield, Pitkin, and Eagle), multiple communities, and a population of over 130,000.

At the heart of our mission we believe that healing begins with a family-first approach. We believe challenges don’t just affect one person—they ripple through entire families and communities. By supporting both individuals and their loved ones, we create lasting connections, resilience, and transformation.

Family is the foundation of our society, and at WindWalkers, we are deeply committed to supporting not just our riders, but also their parents, siblings, and caregivers. Our mission goes beyond the individual—we strive to enhance the physical well-being, behavioral development, and emotional health of our students, their families, and the communities they call home. The impact of our services extends far beyond those with disabilities, creating lasting benefits for society as a whole.

WindWalkers thrives through strong, long-standing partnerships with nonprofits, schools, counselors, therapists, medical professionals, teachers, and client families. With a small but dedicated team, a eight-member volunteer Board of Directors, 130+ skilled volunteers, and an annual budget of just over $1.1 million, our reach is significant, our impact profound, and our commitment unwavering.
