Equine Assisted Learning (EAL)

Equine-assisted learning (EAL) is an experiential learning approach that promotes the development of life skills for educational, professional and personal goals through equine-assisted activities.

PATH International establishes essential standards of professionalism and safety for those engaged in Equine Assisted Services, including Equine Assisted Learning (EAL). In EAL settings, the experiential approach fosters meaningful equine-human interactions, designed around a structured learning experience that aligns with the specific goals of the participant(s).

Equine Assisted Learning offers a wealth of benefits that extend beyond traditional educational practices. Through hands-on experiences with horses, participants develop essential life skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, and emotional regulation. The  dynamics of working with equines promote self-discovery, as individuals confront and navigate their fears, build resilience, and cultivate patience.

Horses serve as mirrors, reflecting participants’ emotions and behaviors, which fosters a deeper understanding of interpersonal dynamics. This non-verbal communication encourages individuals to become more attuned to their own feelings and the feelings of others, enhancing empathy and social awareness. The structured nature of EAL programs allows participants to set personal goals, engage in reflection, and track their progress—skills that are invaluable in both academic and personal contexts.

In addition to these educational benefits, we offer paid internships for local high school students, providing them with valuable opportunities to learn ranch work. These internships not only give students hands-on experience in an important field but also help bring together the community. Students from across the Roaring Fork Valley come together to engage in equine-assisted activities, creating connections that bridge schools and foster a sense of shared purpose within the region.

For high school seniors, incorporating EAL into capstone projects presents an innovative and impactful option. These projects can be tailored to individual interests, allowing students to explore topics such as leadership, emotional intelligence, and community service through the lens of equine interaction. This hands-on approach not only enhances learning but also makes the experience more engaging and impactful.

To support students in these endeavors, we have a dedicated school liaison who facilitates collaboration between EAL programs and school curricula. Our liaison plays a crucial role in fostering connections between our EAL programs and local educational institutions. By collaborating with educators and administrators, our liaison ensures that our after-school programs, internships and capstone projects align with the goals of schools, making equine-assisted activities an integral part of the educational experience. Through outreach and engagement, our liaison helps identify students who can benefit from our programs, providing tailored support that enhances their personal growth and academic success. By bridging the gap between the classroom and the barn, our school liaison promotes a holistic approach to learning that empowers students to thrive both in and out of school.

This holistic approach, with Equine Assisted Therapy, not only enhances learning but also prepares students for future challenges, equipping them with the tools they need to succeed both in school and beyond.
